Extreme Makeover House - New Orleans
The energy-efficient, hurricane-resistant house that EcoBuilders helped build for ABC TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in New Orleans stands as an extremely positive contrast to the more usual stories of slow rebuilding and environmentally-challenged stopgaps like FEMA's mobile homes.
Built in a week, the home has received Platinum
LEED (
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, making it one of the first ten homes in the United States to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's highest honor. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable, and a healthy place to live. In this case, "profitable" does not apply because all participants proudly donated their labor.
Among many other green features, the Extreme Makeover house includes a super-effiecient HVAC system, open cell foam insulation, energy recovery ventilator, native landscaping, solar hot water, sealed crawl space, panelized walls built with virtually no waste by EcoBuilders' partner, Deltec Homes; low VOC paints and finishes and efficient plumbing and electrical fixtures. Three families will live in the house, living in spaces that are "adequate but not very big," according to Rob Moody, EcoBuilders' co-owner.
EcoBuilders was responsible for oversight of the home's green features, coordinated installation of electrical, plumbing and HVAC and supervised interior finishes. "We consistently build silver and gold NC Healthy Built homes, but this one was different," Moody said. "Building a home for three New Orleans families displaced by Katrina was a labor of love for everyone who worked to make it a reality, and the Platinum LEED certification was just icing on the cake."
The EcoBuilders' home is showcased on the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode that aired on Sunday, May 18, 2008. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as Best Reality Program (non-competitive), is in its 5th season on ABC. The program is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. Denise Cramsey is the executive producer; and David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA.
